how does Riku of Two Reflections work with morph?

Asked by jesuslovedhumor 10 years ago

If I have Riku of Two Reflections out and want to play (for example) Venomspout Brackus for its morph cost can I activate Riku's UG copy creature ability and if so what happens? Do I get a copy of the creature I played face down?

I might be wrong but I think it puts a face-up token into play.

702.36b To cast a card using its morph ability, turn it face down. It becomes a 2/2 face-down creature card, with no text, no name, no subtypes, and no mana cost. Any effects or prohibitions that would apply to casting a card with these characteristics (and not the face-up card's characteristics) are applied to casting this card. These values are the copiable values of that object's characteristics.

Riku would make you a 2/2 creature with no name, rules text or subtypes. You would not be able to turn it face up, as the created token doesn't have another face with other text on it.

what about Dual Nature and morph? My thought is that if you play the creature with the morph cost Dual Nature would make a 2/2 token, but when you turn the creature face up the 2/2 creature is no longer in play so the 2/2 creature tokens should die, does nature copy the face up creature? it is technically a new creature, but also not since it was in play.

It is not a new creature. The existing creature merely changed characteristics. You'd still have your 2/2, and in fact, when the newly changed original creature (which now has a name) leaves the battlefield, you won't even lose your 2/2 dual nature token because it doesn't share a name with the creature that left anymore.
