How does Barren Glory Upkeep Trigger work with other upkeep triggers?

Asked by UniqueUserID 8 years ago

Just want to clarify something that came up in a game.

Player A has Barren Glory on the field with Razormane Masticore on the field. Player A controls nothing else and has no hand.

When Player A upkeep starts he gets to choose the order these 2 resolve, however in the ruling corner for Barren Glory it says "Both conditions need to be true for Barren Glory's ability to trigger, and they both need to be true when the ability resolves or it will do nothing. In between, you can control permanents and/or have cards in hand."

So Barren Glory cannot even trigger since Razormane Masticore is on the field? So they cannot sac the Razormane Masticore to win during that upkeep?

Thanks for reading

Correct.

Barren Glory's ability has what's called an intervening "if" clause, which means that the ability will not trigger if the "if" condition is not true during the trigger event, and it won't do anything when it resolves if the condition is not also true then.

Because player A controls a creature at the beginning of his upkeep, Barren Glory's "if" condition is not met and the ability won't trigger. Remember also that abilities won't trigger retroactively, and the beginning of the upkeep is only the exact moment when the upkeep begins. Even if player A sacrifices his creature during the upkeep, he still won't get the Barren Glory trigger.
