Flashing in blockers and how to kill them.

Asked by byepolarbear 9 years ago

So I'm a bit fuzzy on exactly when priority is given to who, not who gets it first but rather when anyone has priority.

Let's say I declare attacks

Opponent flashes in Boon Satyr

Can I Hero's Downfall the Boon Satyr between when it resolves and when blockers are declared?

Is priority passed around the table between the resolution of the Boon Satyr and moving on to the Declare Blockers step?

Priority is first received by the active player in every step and phase, except the untap and cleanup steps where no player receives priority. The game does not move on to the next step or phase until both players pass priority on an empty stack. That's the bare basics of priority.

When it comes to combat,in the declare attackers step, the first thing that happens is the active player declares attackers as a turn based action. Then the game does some other stuff like check for restrictions or requirements or costs associated with attacking. Then the active player receives priority and if they do nothing then the non active player receives priority and this is the point in which they may flash in a creature or animate a man land that they intend to use for blocks or cast any other type of spell they wish. If the non active player does one of these things then another round of priority occurs and this is where you may Downfall their flashed in creature or animated land. Then once both players pass priority on an empty stack, the game moves on to declare blockers. If you let the game move to declare blockers then you cannot do anything until after the blockers have been declared because declare blockers works the same exact way as declare attackers does, except that the turn based action is declaring all blockers before priority is received by any player.
