Does this work or not?

Asked by jotjot 9 years ago

I have Scion of the Ur-Dragon on the battlefield and my opponent has Leyline of the Void. I activate Scion's ability, does he turn into the dragon that is being searched or not knowing that the searched dragon-creature card will not go to the graveyard but to the exile zone instead because of the void. Thank you for the future replies! :-D

Yes, this works.

  • 117.12. Some spells, activated abilities, and triggered abilities read, "[Do something]. If [a player] [does or doesn't], [effect]." or "[A player] may [do something]. If [that player] [does or doesn't], [effect]." The action [do something] is a cost, paid when the spell or ability resolves. The "If [a player] [does or doesn't]" clause checks whether the player chose to pay an optional cost or started to pay a mandatory cost, regardless of what events actually occurred.

The second part of the ability only cares if you tried to carry out the cost. As long as the Dragon card is still face-up in a public zone, Scion will become a copy of it.
