Does the ability Heroic triggers all creatures with Heroic, if only one Creature with Heroic is target?

Asked by Dergam 7 years ago

I usually play with a guy at my local TCG store and when he casts a, for example, Shiv's Embrace on a creature with Heroic, he adds one +1/+1 to other creatures with Heroic, that were not the target of the aura enchantment. Is he wrong?

Akroan Skyguard as an example for heroic.

Heroic is ability word that is shorthand for the text: "Whenever you cast a spell that targets CARDNAME, do X". The CARDNAME in the text for heroic means "this permanent right here", not any cards with the same name, and certainly not any cards with the same ability word.

That would not be generally correct. If he targets Satyr Hoplite with an aura (or w/e, so long as it's a targeted spell), only the targeted creature(s) heroic ability is triggered, and thus it would be the only creature to get a counter. Now, if the heroic trigger is Phalanx Leader's, that would put a +1/+1 counter on all his creatures (not just the Heroic ones).

Hey, Boza. Thanks. Well, I ask because for example, "Exalted" ability works a certain way that it does not specify on all cards (when one attacks alone, it gets +1/+1 for each permanent with exalted under your control), right?

A spell or ability only does what it says it will, and nothing more or less. The wording for triggered abilities is "When(ever) (Condition), (Action)". The condition for exalted was a creature you control attacking alone, whereas heroic is this creature is targeted by a spell.

Thank you, Dracoson. I marked Boza's as right because he answered first, but you are correct and provided even more info.
