Does Prince of Thralls give me control of discarded cards?

Prince of Thralls says that whenever a permanent controlled by another player enters the graveyard, they either pay 3 life or I gain control of the permanent. Does the permanent have to enter the graveyard from the battlefield? If I make an opponent discard a card with something like Despise, will the ability still trigger?

Permanents only exist on the battlefield. Cards in other zones are not permanents. Discarding and milling are irrelevant to Prince of Thralls's ability.
