Does Kediss multiply Silas Renn's ability?

Asked by cardcollector1 9 months ago

Hi, consider running a commander deck with Silas Renn, Seeker Adept and Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar as commanders and playing with multiple players. Suppose that Silas successfully deals combat damage to an opponent and Kediss is on the field. Kediss' ability will trigger causing other opponents to also take damage, now X opponents take damage. Does this also mean that Silas' ability also triggers X times, so that X artifacts can be cast from the graveyard?

I expect this to be true, but then again the extra damage from Kediss doesn't count as commander damage.

No, you won't get extra triggers from Silas Renn with this interaction. "Combat damage" is specifically the damage resulting from a creature assigning combat damage equal to its power during the combat damage steps (for both first strike damage and regular damage) of the combat phase. Any other damage is non-combat damage, even if it happens to be dealt by a creature during combat. The additional damage from Kediss' ability doesn't count as combat damage (note that if it did count as combat damage, then it would cause a loop of Kediss re-triggering itself over and over again until all the opponents were dead).

Thanks Rhadamanthus! Now it makes sense why I don't see many decks with these two commanders!
