If you discard a creature card, does that count as the creature dies?

Negative. "Dies" is a keyword that means specifically to go to the graveyard from the battlefield.

700.4 The term dies means is put into a graveyard from the battlefield.

Not a keyword in the sense of MTG rules. Is a keyword in the English definition of "keyword". Other than that, what FanceyTuesday said.
