Colorless Commander w/ Ability Needing Colors

Asked by CaiusV 6 years ago

If I use Bosh, Iron Golem as my commander, can I use mountains as red mana for his ability even though red isn't in Bosh's converted mana cost?

Commander uses a thing called Color Identity, which is not the same as Color. A card's Color Identity includes any mana symbols present in its text box, as well as its mana cost. So Bosh's Color Identity is Red. This means if he is your commander, you can use mountains, and Red cards. Inversely, if you have a different commander which does not have Red in its Color Identity, then you cannot use Bosh in that deck.

Note also that converted mana cost is always colorless; it's just the numerical value of all of the mana symbols in a card's upper right corner. The printed values are the card's mana cost (not CMC).

But, as Tyrant-Thanatos explained, color identity is what matters in Commander.
