Can Sidisi, Undead Vizier exploit itself to tutor?

Asked by DalDakota 8 years ago

Last FNM, me and my opponent got into a discussion about a creature exploiting itself, and does it's exploit ability resolve if it does. I was trying to counter a creature with Silumgar Sorcerer. While on that subject Sidisi, Undead Vizier exploiting itself was brought up, and apparently someone tried to do it in a tournament, and was told they could not. I'm confused as to why a card like Silumgar Sorcerer can exploit itself and resolve it's ability, but Sidisi, Undead Vizier cannot.

Technically, you can sacrifice them both to themselves via the enter the battlefield Exploit trigger, but the second ability won't trigger if you do. So you can't do that with Silumgar Sorcerer either.

There are two triggered abilities on a creature with Exploit: an ability that triggers when it enters the battlefield, and then one that triggers when a creature is sacrificed to the Exploit trigger. For the second trigger to actually trigger, the Exploit creature must be on the battlefield when the sacrificed creature is Exploited. If you sacrifice Silumgar Sorcerer to its Exploit trigger, since its not on the battlefield when that trigger resolves, the second ability can't be triggered.

tl;dr, the creature with Exploit must remain on the battlefield in order for its second ability to trigger.

2/25/2015 If the creature with exploit isn't on the battlefield as the exploit ability resolves, you wont get any bonus from the creature with exploit, even if you sacrifice a creature. Because the creature with exploit isnt on the battlefield, its other triggered ability wont trigger.

702.109b A creature with exploit exploits a creature when the controller of the exploit ability sacrifices a creature as that ability resolves.

  1. You choose whether to sacrifice a creature and which creature to sacrifice as the exploit ability resolves.

  2. You can sacrifice the creature with exploit if its still on the battlefield. This will cause its other ability to trigger.

  3. You cant sacrifice more than one creature to any one exploit ability.

Sidsi can exploit itself.

The one GoldGhost012 is refering to, is if someone removes if from the game while the exploit ability is still on the stack. For example, I cast Sidsi, her exploit trigger goes on the stack, someone kills Sidsi. When her exploit resolves, it won't have anything to trigger.

it is because a creature isn't sacrificed until the resolution of the exploit.
