Can I destroy Whirler Virtuoso before he creates energy?

My opponent is casting Whirler Virtuoso, and I like to destroy it before he creates 3 energy counters. Can I do so?

Assuming you're using an instant to destroy it yes you can. This will not prevent them from using energy the already have to create a token, nor will it stop them from getting the energy after the Whirler Virtuoso dies, but it will prevent them from being able to make one of the tokens (which may be all they could make anyways).
