Ashiok Nightmare Weaver Use

After playing fnm my opponent was using Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver . After exiling my cards he was able to play them as soon as he had enough mana. My question is why was he able to play them if the card does not say that he can such as Nightveil Specter does? Or is this just a general rule?

He was playing incorrectly. You can only play cards exiled with Ashiok using his second ability. You cannot cast them normally just by paying mana. In the future, you should absolutely call a judge if something like this happens. He may not have known himself, but he very well could have been intentionally taking advantage of you.
