Ajani's Pridemate and extort timing question

Asked by jmart1079 9 years ago

So if cast Ajani's Pridemate and I'm able to use extort from say a Thrull Parasite already on the field, do I place counters on Ajani's Pridemate because I just gained life? Or no because Ajani's Pridemate hasn't "resolved", I only just cast him (activating extort).

No counters. The Pridemate would still be on the stack (not on the battlefield) when the extort trigger resolves and you gain life.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Extort triggers when you cast a spell. If you cast an Ajani's Pridemate , Extort will trigger and resolve first. Assuming you paid the mana, your opponent(s) will lose life and you will gain life. Then the Pridemate will resolve. Since it was on the stack when you gained life from Extort, not on the battlefield, its ability will not have triggered, and you won't get to put counters on it.
