Aether Vial Ability

My opponent has an AEther Vial in play with two counters on it. In response to his activation of its ability, I Ancient Grudge the Vial. Will he be able to put in only a 0-drop creature that he may have (because the Vial is not in play and has zero counters), or will the two counters from the Vial before its destruction be used for the ability?

You will use the last known information about the AEther Vial in this case he could put in 2 drop.
