About Ferocious.

So, my friend plays his Avalanche Tusker, and I counter with Disdainful Stroke, then he counters that with Stubborn Denial. Question is, can I pay 1 to negate Stubborn Denial?

You can pay 1 as long as your opponent doesn't control a creature that has power at least 4. When you cast a spell it goes on to the stack not straight to the battlefield. This means that a creature has to have already resolved to let fericious become active.

As long as your opponent has no creatures on the battlefield with power 4 or greater. As said above, casting the Avalanche Tusker simply means it's on the stack and not on the field. Avalanche Tusker will not contribute to the ferocious on Stubborn Denial, allowing you to pay the 1 and negate it.
