A couple questions about the most flavorfull equipment in magic?

Haunted Plate Mail , If I have no creatures can I cast it, activate its ability and swing immediately? Can I activate it during my opponents turn? I wouldn't think so but I can hope.

Oh I see. It is different from equip, its just a mana ability. ok, thank you.

it is NOT a mana ability. It is an activated ability that has a mana cost. Mana abilities are abilities that:
Produce mana.
Don't target
Aren't loyalty abilities.
This is very important because mana abilities don't use the stack and can't be responded to. Activated abilities with mana costs do use the stack.

I love the Haunted Plate Mail for the zero to 4 x 4/4's on the board for zero cost.

No, you cannot attack with an activated Haunted Plate Mail the turn it comes into play. Summoning sickness overrides the artifact exemption, so when it turns into a creature, it will be affected by summoning sickness.
Yes, you can activate Haunted Plate Mail on an opponent's turn, provided you have no creatures on the battlefield.
