Use case: Why does this have to be so goddamn hard?

TappedOut forum

Posted on Aug. 31, 2011, 7:34 p.m. by coffee

  1. Want to show deck to friend who may not be familiar with all the cards.
  2. Remember seeing a deck that was posted on tappedout. Looked nice and usable enough.
  3. Go to tappedout.
  4. Try pasting deck. Doesn't work.
  5. Jump through hoop.Jump through hoop.Jump through hoop.Jump through hoop.Jump through hoop.Jump through hoop.Jump through hoop.Jump through hoop.Jump through hoop.Jump through hoop.Jump through hoop.

?. Have a deck viewable by said friend.

For comparison, deckstats.net does this by copypasting the decklist (handles both "4x Brainfuck" as well as "4 Brainfuck"), and giving you an URL. Yeah, no fancy name. In compensation I'm ready 5 minutes earlier with much less headache.

It could be easy AND look sweet to the viewer. Right now, it just looks sweet to the viewer and is an absolute pain to use.

You could be a little more courteous. Also my friend has deck pasted into this site plenty of times without issue. Maybe you have to type out the cards, but with a list in front of you, that should take about a minute.

Umm its not really that hard. Its probably just user error or something.

big damn deal you take a little effort to add in a deck. Be thankful the people of Tappedout! made this amazing site. If you are such a jerk that you would complain about it. Find another site to use. And i dare you to find one as good or one that has awesome people that are willing to help.

And another thing its not hard at all i copy and paste all the time. You should blame it on user error not the sight.

You can enter either 4 Brainfuck or 4x Brainfuck and it will take both on here.

If you'd like assistance, please post the exact problems you are having. Posting wild complaints about troubles without seeking assistance is unproductive.

maybe the deck had its name changed.

It tends to happen.

Try looking into the deck hub section to see if you have any luck.

Otherwise, the safest way to keep track of decks is to keep track of the deck users.

I'm not even sure what the problems he encountered were.

I'm willing to believe its a pain to use--I suck at UI. Wish I had more specific grievances though (as far as bug reports go).

User error is often evidence of a 'rough edge' in the process. And this isn't the first complaint about the deck builder I've heard.

I taught a guy how to use the deck editor last night. He was having problems with it because he was using the workstation mode (which is cumbersome in my opinion). I told him to use the normal mode and he said it was much easier.

@yeaGO! My guess is that there was a problem with the deck's cards not exactly matching the names or something similar, as it is one nitpick I've had with tappedout that the card names within the database don't always exactly match the Oracle text name/printed English name. Either that, or the guy was using the workstation mode, which is cumbersome if you know a card's rules text or something but not the name or some other scenario where you need to search for the name, but that isn't, in my opinion of poor UI as much as a function of the site's existing design not being meant to handle searching for a card by a means other than its name, although, by set, the site still is top notch.

Back, and in a calmer mood this time.

To be specific:I wanted to show a deck to a friend, and remembered that your deck presentation was great, so I thought I would give it a whirl.

I tried to use the "New? Preview your deck!" function. Copypasted my decklist and sideboard there, but the formatting frustrated the parser for some reason (might've been tabs instead of normal spaces). Corrected it to be 4x Cardname and it worked, but I saw no link to show to a friend.

So, I needed to make an account, I guess. Did so. Tried the quickpaste. I don't remember if I had formatting problems, but it didn't result in a link I could give to an outsider either.

Add MTG deck it is, then. Give it a name, choose format (which seems to not function atm - both of my Pauper lists are listed as Legacy) and Normal Mode, go. Finally, a usable link. My frustration was because I am used to deckstats.net where the process is literally just write/paste deck, click go, and it gives you a nice deckview, broken down by your own dividers if you so choose, and get a link to the deck instantly. This link is not unique, and is a jumble of stuff, but that doesn't really matter when it can simply be copypasted.

My needs aren't really the workstation or anything. I just want to quickly copypaste or write decklists and get links I can show to others for commentary. If I can save them to an account, all the better. Because of that, much of the collection management and other things are relatively superfluous and generally get in the way instead of helping. If a "quick&simple mode" could be implemented, it'd be amazing for me.

The rest is just minor quibbles of the deck sorting and things. Specifically:

(Pastebin because forum kept screwing up my formatting)
