Feature Tokens Assistance and Possible Suggestion

TappedOut forum

Is there a way to earn Feature Tokens other than donating? I already have 1. Are there particular ways to get involved in the community that would result in being rewarded additional Tokens?

Seeing as I don't have an upgraded account, I only get a single deckcycle each day. It is very rough coming when I would like to work on multiple decks simultaneously. A way to be rewarded with additional Tokens by being more active and participating in the site would be a great way to assist members who don't, say, have the money to pay for an upgraded account.

That's my question and suggestion. Please, I would love assistance on this. :3 I want to be able to get involved and feel rewarded for spending the time doing so since I have no way to pay for feature tokens.

This is something we've been talking about on and off for about a week now. I proposed that users could earn tokens for good card suggestions or Q&A answers (perhaps every 100 or so, so as not to devalue the tokens themselves) as a way to give an incentive for active and helpful participation in the community. I'm not sure where the debate currently stands - it hasn't been talked about in a few days. However, you are not the only user who supports this concept and I think it may be something that gets introduced in the future. It all depends on what yeaGO! decides.

So, currently there isn't any way to get the tokens then? That's kind of a bummer. = I really hope it happens. I personally have like 3 decks I've yet to post up that I need to work on but only can deckcycle once each day. x.x It sucks.

On another more site-newbie question: what's the Q&A area like? Is there a way to keep track of your posts in there or something? I'll have to go give it a look, it seems.

You can still buy them, but there are no other ways as of right now (buying them funds the site, though, so it's a good cause).

I don't know what you're asking in regards to the Q&A. That forum is for rules questions; it's meant to be used to ask things like "What happens when a creature with trample is blocked by a creature with protection from X?" or "What is the penalty for having an illegal card in your deck?" As far as keeping track of your posts, I'm not sure what you mean.

I took a look at the Q&A area of the site. I just got finished responding to a question, even. lol

What I was referring to about the post tracking. You mentioned something like "every 100 posts" or so in Q&A possibly being a condition to get the token. How would you track your 100 posts by the system? That'd require some kind of mod, I would think.

I know you can buy them, and I wouldn't mind donating to the site, honestly, IF I had the money to do so. xD I don't have the spare money to spend on a website right now. My life is kind of rough right now.

Sometimes you just gotta Treat Yo Self. Even with an account upgrade you could deckcycle 3 times a day. A measly five bux. Unless you are livin in East Africa I think you could scrape it up =)

considering I have no job and I'm having to find ways to raise my child, I think my money needs to go someplace more important at the moment. Its the same reason why I haven't gotten to buy/play mtg locally in a few months now.

You might find this article to be helpful.

That article needs to be more handy because I was attempting to link it =)

But yeah, there are many basics you can do to get more attention on your decks without paying. This certainly is not a site designed to be pay-to-play.

I guess so far the biggest issue I have is not knowing many people on this site. I just read the article. I think I do everything it already lists other than posting on other's walls. I'm already putting myself into the community, even if its slightly late-coming. lol I joined the site, went inactive for a time, then now coming back since I can't play locally. I also can't play on mtgo, though I have an account, because the internet where I'm at right now is far too slow. Dial-up is so prehistoric. T_T

Anyway, if the site added in that feature to earn tokens, it would be great, but for now I guess my question has been answered and I've been assisted by being directed to Epochalyptik's article. Thanks a ton. Oh, and yeaGO!, how'd you do that feature thing on my deck Flicker of Life?

I don't believe such a system as being more active and helpful on the site and get feature tokens is really possible. Let's say someone makes a program for the site so it can keep track of how many comments someone makes and when they hit 100 they get a token, with that program I could easily see comments like "a;lkja;dslkfjou" , "Deck looks good, another!" or "yes you do know not how to play mtg" and in vast quantities simply so people can rack up those points. Since it is literally impossible to make the program itself determine whether or not a comment is good or bad (closest this I believe would be word nonrecognition, but even that could be easily exploitable) the site would require someone to look at every comment and penalize or discredit bad comments which would be a good 24/7 job depending on the success of the site. And if they went with another approach of having someone look through all the comments and then award the points to rack up tokens it would be all too easy for that person or those people to miss some really good comments and it could still be possibly a system that valued quantity of comments over quality.

I do have a suggestion that might work better for earning feature tokens though. Each month give all the upgraded accounts a few feature tokens that can only be given away to basic accounts and if those basic accounts upgrade reward the upgraded accounts with some feature tokens. This way it gives incentive to give high quality comments between both types of accounts as the basic accounts really want more free ways to get their decks seen and upgraded accounts really want the basic accounts they're helping to upgrade and in both events the only way any negative comments would come up would be if someone with an upgraded account was a dick about expecting every basic account they helped to upgrade.

damn huge block-o-text, sigh why do I write this instead of doing my homework...

yeah mtg does take up a good amount of my time and I do try to suggest tappedout to people whenever I can, also this doesn't require as much thought as modeling, unwrapping, and texturing assets for video games either...

so any opinions on my idea?

I considered the problem of mass-posting for tokens and proposed a solution that has already been implemented. You'll notice that with card suggestions, you are able to accept or decline based on their quality and relevance. On your user page, it shows a figure representing the number of accepted (good) suggestions you've made. Rewards would not be given out for any contributions, only for good ones.

Comments would follow a similar principle if they were relevant. Q&A answers can easily be tracked.

I'm not so much a fan of the other proposal because it requires people to choose between other users and a lot of decent users can get shafted if everyone independently decides to award tokens or points to only the top users. Individual merit would be a better system because it would give everyone the chance to earn something based on his or her own work. Additionally, the alternative system would kind of encourage people to give feedback on popular discussions since it's an easier way to get noticed and recognized. There would be little incentive to help out default members on obscure decks.

so how exactly does one suggest cards with that new system? I've noticed some pretty terrible suggestions and am curious to know why...

August 20, 2012 7:58 p.m.

yeaGO says... #16

With suggestions I could make a sock account and start pumping it up full of suggestions. Same thing with comments as Demarge said which is why I have avoided such features.

Gift tokens for upgraded users. huh. I think I like that. Something like that.

August 20, 2012 8 p.m.

Any system will have its flaws. How exactly would the gift token idea work out? It seems like it could be providing more of an incentive to not upgrade than anything else if the most high-profile default users are the ones constantly reaping the benefits without having to upgrade. There's also not really any reason to believe that default accounts will upgrade if rewarded with a few tokens, which further hurts the system when it comes to rewarding upgraded users.

Thoughts?

My thoughts: I want tokens! lol

Hmm...maybe host community events where the top winners get tokens? I don't know. I'm just spitting out more fodder. Feel free to feed it to the dragons. xD
