High Priest of Penance Question

I'm confused as to when High Priest of Penance 's ability resolves. Say I was to attack with two 2/2 creatures at the same time. The High Priest of Penance blocks one. Does that player get to decide to destroy your other creature instantly making none of the damage go through? Or do they have to wait until after combat damage goes through? I would assume that it is the latter since I believe all combat damage is done simultaneously, but I'm not positive.

All combat is done simultaneously, assuming there isn't a first strike phase going on.

I believe unless the one you block has first strike, all combat damage would resolve at once. I'm honestly not even sure about the first strike bit but that would be my best guess.

All damage is done simultaneously and any abilities triggered by damage goes on the stack, with the active player receiving priority first. So no you can't block with High Priest of Penance and kill the other creature before it deals damage.

First strike and double strike create another Combat Damage Step, which does include a passing of priority after damage has been assigned. So if High Priest of Penance was dealt damage in the first strike phase, its ability would go on the stack and would resolve before the normal combat damage step.
