FNM?

General forum

Hey everyone. I'm pretty new to playing magic (I re-started after a couple years off) and have gotten really into it. I'm pretty Johnny-ish and, IMO, have built some pretty good standard decks. However, I've never been to a FNM or the like. My question here is what are they like? Are the people generally chill or trying to rip you off? Are they up for casual games, etc? I get that there are exceptions to every rule. Just asking for your personal perceptions....

for the most part in my experience people are cool and tend to help you improve your deck and almost all are willing to play a casual game or two.

Okay first thing first... If you're not used to Tournament play you will be up for an experience.

FNM is usually people coming out to play seriously so if you get totally blown out your first few times going, DON'T get discouraged. A lot of people think their decks are amazing because they can win in their group of friends but as you move up in play a different story occurs. What you can do is ask for opinions on your deck, look at options, play test on here against Pro Decks and etc.

As for the people you will run into all kinds from casuals to serious tourny people. Will there be people looking to rip you off? Of course! What can you do? Not be naive. If you have cards that you think are valuable look up the prices and have an idea of what you yourself are interested in.

Most cases the event is chill and a nice way to spend a Friday evening.

As for standard.... It is expensive to start up and get back into it and also keep up with it. Knowing card values is an advantage.

What I run into personally??

At my shop everyone is pretty chill 'cause we all know each other but if I go to a shop that I'm not familiar with trash talk and the usual "girls can't play" banter is what I should alway expect. At first this was super disheartening for me but after I push people's s#*& in they lighten up and show some respect hahahahaha.

Don't go into FNM with too expectations really!! Just be at ease and try to have a good time!~~*

and be ready for fast play. always make sure an opponent lets you get a chance to respond. if someone starts being an @$$, do this, "im starting my turn, do you wish to respond?, im drawing my card, do you wish to respond?, im tapping my mana, do you wish to respond?".

joking aside, always give the chance to have your deck cut. and keep paper to keep track of math on life and creatures powers or use dice. dont say "i swing with my 2/2 Etched Champion , oh you take it, hes a 4/4 due my Tempered Steel actually so you took 4".

don't be discouraged if everybody you play has a U/W control deck with 1235098098509 planeswalkers and they totally use jace, the mind sculptor's ultimate ability on you.

just know, that if you keep going, if you keep playing Magic, that by October of next year, they can't use said cards anymore :D

How your FNM goes will strongly depend on your playgroup/local shop. If you have a group of strongly competitive players, they might bring their A-game every week and treat FNM as serious competition practice and use optimized standard decks.

On the other hand, some areas use FNM as their way to blow off steam and play janky combos or weird things that they'd never dare to bring to a serious tournament because they just want to have fun with it. Most of the FNM prizes aren't that great anyways, so I wouldn't worry about needing to win. One way or the other you should be able to get practice or have fun.

I usually play FNM with a goal in mind to do something stupid or ridiculous in a deck that just makes the opponent rub the bridge of their nose and sigh, even if they win over all. Like a shaky five card combo! Yeeeeah baby.

FNM can be looked at in 2 groups.

  1. Those who try to try out a new deck idea and see how it fairs against the field.
  2. Those who want to playtest a new/net deck idea and see how it fairs for tourney preperation.
Regardless you will get these 2 different groups and mostly will find everyone switching to group 2 when a tourney is up and coming. but don't let that discourage you, as FNM can often bring the unexpected deck and challange to you and you to them.

It's a weekly event to meet other like minded folk and that can often lead to fun times. so go with an open mind, enjoy the evening. And most FNM players are often open to giving and providing advice on decks and ideas for bettering yourself - If your not too busy kicking their butt :)

well, make sure you're familiar with the floor rules. other than that, if you have a question, just ask a judge - that's what they're there for.
