I'm thinking about buying some cards soon and I'd like to know if anyone knew where I could find examples of what different levels of damage look like a card. I've bought moderately played cards before and was fine with the quality but I don't want to buy a damaged card to save a few dollars and have the card look like pure crap

Depends on the seller.

I use SCG's guide as the gold standard. Your store may vary.

I actually built a casual deck entirely out of Heavily Played cards. It cost me less than $50, and would have been over $400 in any better condition. Totally not tournament-legal, but fun to mess around with.

Damaged cards might not be tournament legal. Heavily played often are. Just remember, when you need to sell cards, it's often easier to sell off NM or Slightly Played ones.

You could just amazon if you wanted a huge sample size.

I usually go no lower than lightly played. I believe tcgplayer actually has a ranking system so moderately played should still be ok. Worn edges, scuffed face or maybe scratches, but not to the point you can't play with it.

I've used card kingdom and they have had pictures up for examples of what the different qualities are to help keep any confusion out of what you buy.
