Mind Seize, Commander 2013 Deck

Does anyone know why, specifically, this deck is already climbing in price, when the other decks are not?

It can't be Sol Ring because they all have that card.

is it the one with the 1/1 deathtouch flyer that draws you a card? You know that one card that's a staple in legacy.

Baleful Strix ? Yeah. Also True-Name Nemesis, which is new.

I think True-Name Nemesis and Baleful Strix are the culprits. Baleful Strix being expensive on its own and Nemesis seems really good, especially in a Legacy Merfolk deck.

Just speculation on my part as I don't really play Legacy and as far as I know they don't play 3 drop Merfolks in there. Still, protection from a player is ridiculously good.

It essentially reads: Protection from Artifacts / Colors / Creatures.

Yeh but... where I live the deck is about $80. Last time I checked Baleful Strix was about $20

It is obviously the better of the 5 decks. I was willing to split a full pack of 5 3 ways paying evenly but I would get mindseize and the other two people could pick two out of the remaining four decks - except that one of the other players also wanted mindseize.

There are a few specific cards that are already known to be good (it easily pays for itself at retail price - and is probably a worthwhile investment at an inflated price).

If it does jump that high in price and I can't get it from Walmart for the retail price then I guess I just saved myself $30. I can see paying up to +$20 for it over the retail price - that's my absolute limit. I have 12 other decks (including pauper) and none of them cost that much. I will resort to buying singles and waiting until summer again - not worth it to buy them early if it gets inflated that fast.

I have one on pre order for 45GBP which is about $75. Here in the UK the price of cards is ridiculous but like you mentioned - it will still be a sound investment (because ALL the cards in the UK are more expensive).

The lowest I can get a sol ring for is the equivalent of $15, and baleful strix is $25.

@ChiefBell That's why I was thinking I would get the mindseize deck and then turn around and sell off Baleful Strix and Sol Ring (or trade them for some of the things on my long-term wanted list that are over a buck.)

I have no doubt that mindseize is worth $50 and could stretch to $60 all fees and taxes included (with the added value of convenience and trying out new cards I wouldn't think to buy, etc.)

I suspect this deck will skyrocket after C13 is sold out.

I don't get the whole preorder for only twice MSRP thing when Target and Wallmart will be selling them at MSRP (Target still occasionally has the old ones for less). I think I'll be getting a copy of mind seize, especially since it has a strix in it. I was already going to be getting that one anyways to use as the basis of my next deck. Guess I should go read the whole deck list now, shouldn't I

So glad my LGS is taking pre-orders at MSRP. I was able to order all 5 for $150.

@meecht I can't help but notice how Mindseize plays into the marketing strategy for LGS's selling the pack of all 5 at $150. If just one of those 5 decks becomes close to half (or more) of that value by itself with the other 4 decks adding up to nearly the rest of the value in Sol Ring copies alone - and with one of the 5 being so much better than the rest that it becomes trickier to split it fairly between people ... it starts to look more worth it to get the whole set (assuming that Mindseize sells out really fast at Wal Mart and Target stores).

Which is out of the question for me! But I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of commander players did that, actually.

I typically play a mono-red deck, but I'm going to change Mind Seize into Nekusar, the Mindrazer with lots of wheel/draw effects, damage doublers (aka Furnace of Rath ), and infect-granting stuff (Grafted Exoskeleton ).

I'll probably use the other decks as trade fodder to help fill out the Grixis one.

By "staple in legacy" do you mean the card that is in only about 1/8 of the decks, most commonly as a 2 of, and is only high because it was printed in one narrowly distributed set?

My shop is selling them at MSRP, and I preordered it and the Bant one last week.

True-Name Nemesis is going for around $30 on eBay.

He rebuys the deck at MSRP himself.

Baleful Strix , in usd, is a 5-6 dollar card atm. True-Name Nemesis sits around 30-35. These are the lows for them. The main reason is TNN. Being new and op for legacy.

Baleful is a staple in shardless BUG. TNN has found a home in most decks running U as a 2-3 of. I run legacy merfolk because of TNN, but he is also a staple in my other fav U/W/x stoneblade.

I was lucky on this one. I got a set of C13 for 125$ on release and 2 extra mind seizes for msrp at walmart, along with a 4th at sealed commander tourny.
