Creature- Mutant

Suspend- 3 (Rather then play this card from your hand, you may pay and remove it from the game with three time counters on it. At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter. When you remove the last, play it without paying its mana cost, it becomes a 5/4 Goblin Mutant with haste.) 2/1

Cool idea. A 5/4 on T3 isn't isn't unheard of . Though, because of the Suspend and it being a Mutant, I'd suggest perhaps have the Suspend cost be , instead of ?

TypicalTimmey, thanks for the feedback on this one and yeah I like this idea a lot.. The Hybrid Mutant theme can go well beyond here. I just used a Goblin as a pedestal as it can be attributed to all five colors, for example in Plains it could be something like a Angel or Bird, soldier whatever and when it suspends back in, they would have Vigilance, Life-link or both and so on with blue, black, green etc. etc. so yeah fun idea. "Hybrids"

I'll consider your suggestions and think on this some more for sure for a solid outcome. I welcome all the feedback we can get here. thanks~

So are you thinking that the "Hybrid" should remain to only creatures? or any ideas on mutating all five colors?

The thing is Suspend is not worded like that. It cannot become a different creature by coming out of suspend.

The correct way to word this would be similar to Epochrasite :

Goblin Hybrid
Creature - Goblin Mutant

Suspend 3 (Rather then play this card from your hand, you may pay and remove it from the game with three time counters on it. At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter. When you remove the last, play it without paying its mana cost. It gains haste.)

Enters the battlefield with 3 +1/+1 counters if you didn't cast it from your hand.

2/1

My point is if you want to make a suspend-esque mechanic for mutant creatures, you have to name it differently, as the rules for suspend are set in stone and cannot be changed. For example:

Mutate 3 (Pay the cost and Exile this card from your hand with 3 mutate counters. When you cast another Goblin spell, remove a counter. When the last one is removed, cast ~ without paying its mana cost, with 3 +1/+1 counters on it and one of the following: haste, vigilance, trample, deathouch, intimidate.)

Alright Boza that makes good sense.. we can definitely do that. thanks for your suggestions and good ones at that. So I am pretty new to the creations here so; is it okay to add our own descriptions and wording of abilities and effects? Seeing that WOTC have set them in stone do we creators use our own wording concepts if existing ones do not work or apply?

Instead of having it come down as a 5/4 because you designed it so, we could have a mechanic that links +1/+1 to the amount of time counters. I realized afterwards that Boza kind of did it except (s)he wrote it as a characteristic of the card. I genuinely think making it a mechanic in itself would be more interesting.

So, you would have :

Goblin Hybrid Creature - Goblin Mutant

Mutation 3 (Rather then play this card from your hand, you may pay and remove it from the game with three time counters on it. At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter. When you remove the last, play it without paying its mana cost. It gains haste and enters the battlefield with a number of +1/+1 counters equal to the time counters removed).

2/1

OR

Drake Hybrid Creature - Drake Mutant

Mutation X , where X is the number of cards you have in your hand as you mutate Drake Mutant. (Rather then play this card from your hand, you may pay and remove it from the game with three time counters on it. At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter. When you remove the last, play it without paying its mana cost. It gains haste and enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters).

1/1, Flying

Just my opinion, but I think it'd make for a cool mechanic that could be adapted to each and every color, for example 'Mutation X, where X is the:

  • amount of damage dealt this turn to your opponents for
  • number of cards you drew this turn/in hand for
  • number of creatures you control for
  • number of cards your opponents discarded/creatures that died this turn for
  • highest power/toughness value of among your creatures for '

Nice! WizardOfTheNorthernCoast that all just made the cut on this one.. thank you very much for taking the time to relay all of the specifics of this mechanic here. It would be pretty awesome to see Mutants and/or Hybrids introduced in MTG thanks so much~

To clarify you have two choices:

  • Use the existing suspend mechanic and make the mutate options as part of the text of the card by using "If you didn't cast this from your hand, do X". You will be bound by having the same suspend mechanic, but can improvise a lot in the conditional triggered ability.

  • Use a custom mechanic similar to or not at all similar to suspend, for example, those provided by WOTNC. More flexible for sure.

Both approaches have merit, but I would advise against making a new mechanic with 7 lines of reminder text like suspend. Suspend has to do it, because it represents three abilities at once. Yours can and should be simpler.

I agree that the text between () is too long. Now, you could assume people know the Suspend mechanic by now and basically do the same thing WotC did in reverse with Menace. It used to be 'This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.' and became a keyword ability.

If you consider that players should know the mechanic or look it up if they're new, you could state it as follows : Mutate X (Suspend X. When you remove the last time counter, play this card without paying its mana cost. It gains haste and enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters).

I did look up a suspend card text and the only thing I added was; it becomes a 5/4 Goblin Mutant with haste.

And yeah I understand now~
