New to Commander please help!

Hi there, so I'm quite a competitive modern junky, and I've never really delved into commander before. My friends play a little more casually and have encouraged me to build an EDH deck of my own so I don't have to use theirs every time. I decided to just throw some stuff together, but they have some pretty good decks because they play it a little more seriously than me (all their good stuff goes into EDH while mine goes towards funding modern).
This is my first EDH deck! Please help me figure out how to upgrade it so I can keep up with their decks because after playing tonight, I got decimated over and over. I just really don't know how to build it. I would say I'm willing to spend 100 dollars max on upgrades.
