Why Has the Elric Saga Never Been Adapted Into a Feature Film?

Disclaimer: before I start my thread, at the time of this post, I actually have never read any books of the Elric Saga, but I hope to soon remedy that status.

The Elric Saga, by Michael Moorcock, is a medieval fantasy series, one that I have often heard mentioned in the same sentences as such illustrious titles as The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and A Song of Ice and Fire as one of the greatest examples of the genre, yet it does not have the mainstream status of those other works: to make a comparison, it is like Salieri to Mozart, The Kinks to The Beatles, Budgie to Led Zeppelin, Sir Lord Baltimore to Black Sabbath, Diamond Head to Iron Maiden, or Battlestar Galactica to Star Wars and Star Trek.

I have conducted some research, and it seems that there has never been a feature film or television adaptation of the Elric Saga, despite the books being published at a time when medieval fantasy and the "swords and sorcery" fad were very popular, and many musicians, most notably Led Zeppelin and Cirith Ungol, were incorporating fantasy themes into their music.

Why is that, I wonder? Why has there never been a feature film adaptation of the Elric Saga? What does everyone else say about this?

There was supposedly a plan to do one ... but I have no idea why it didn't happen.
