Ziatora's Envoy and the damage trigger

Asked by Swebb87 2 years ago

Ziatora's Envoy says "Whenever Ziatora's Envoy deals combat damage to a player, look at the top card of your library. You may play a land from the top of your library or cast a spell with mana value less than or equal to the damage dealt from the top of your library without paying its mana cost. If you don't, put that card into your hand". If it does 3 damage to the player (after the trample goes over the 2/2 blocking it) does the player get to cast a spell for 3 or 5, as 5 was the total damage dealt by Ziatora's Envoy

You get to cast a spell with mana value 3 or lower. The trigger phrase includes "When Ziatora's Envoy deals combat damage to a player," so damage that is not dealt to a player doesn't count toward its effect.

If it didn't include the "to a player" clause, you would be able to count the full 5 damage.
