X Spells on Isochron Scepter (I beleive it can be done and here's how)
Asked by scholar 12 years ago
The official Oracle text of Isochron Scepter states:
"Imprint When Isochron Scepter enters the battlefield, you may exile an instant card with converted mana cost 2 or less from your hand.
2, Tap: You may copy the exiled card. If you do, you may cast the copy without paying its mana cost."
My question is about an 'X' spell like card:Aurelia's Fury imprinted on it. Now on the same issue, one of Oracle's ruling states: "You don't pay the spell's mana cost. If the spell has X in its mana cost, X is 0. You do pay any additional costs for that spell. You can't use any alternative costs."
Okay I get it. When I cast the copied card without paying its mana cost, X is clearly 0, because it says so.
But also according to the oracle text of Isochron Scepter , it still says "you MAY cast the copy without paying its mana cost". Okay so I choose to cast the copy WITH paying its mana cost. It might cost a total of five mana to deal one damage with Aurelia's Fury, but can it be done...?? Can you CHOOSE to pay the spell's mana cost AFTER you copy the exiled card?

No. Isochron lets you either cast it without paying its mana cost, or you choose not to cast it. It doesn't let you choose to change how you cast it (as in, you can't choose to pay the mana cost).
