Willbreaker abilitiy versus protection from blue.

So this situtaion occur on MTGO so I assume it resolve correctly and thus answers the question but I don't understand why its works like this...
So the situation is thus, its my opponents turn and they've just pumped up their sole creature in the their main phase ready to attack. I have my Willbreaker and attempt to cast an Icy Blast on the creature triggering Willbreaker ability. My opponents responds by playing Feat of Resistance giving it protection from blue. The Icy Blast fails to resolve as the creature is no longer a valid target but the Willbreaker ability does resolve and I gain control of the creature untapped.
I thought I was screwed as I expected the Willbreaker ability to also fail to resolve since the source of the ability is blue. So why does it resolve like it did?
In magic there is no attempt to cast a spell unless you make an illegal play. You cast spells, then your opponent has a chance to respond to you casting that spell. Even if they counter spell it, the spell was still cast, and any abilities that trigger when a spell is cast are put on the stack prior to anyone getting a chance to cast another spell.
Here is what happens:
they pump their creature
You cast Icy Blast
Willbreaker's ability triggers on Icy Blast being cast.
your opponent cast Feat of Resistance naming blue
Feat of Resistance resolves
Willbreaker's ability resolves since it don't target or deal damage
Icy Blast is countered cause it has not legal targets.

Link all cards in your question.
Well, the Willbreaker's ability doesn't target. The creature already was targeted by Icy Blast, so the ability works regardless of protection. Protection protects against damage, targeting, and blocking, but it doesn't protect against abilities from sources the protection is from, if those abilities do not target or deal damage.
