will Reckless Embermage's ability resolve even if he has left play?

Asked by ilikeoldcardsbetter 13 years ago

if I activate Reckless Embermage 's ability 3 times (putting them all on the stack before any resolve) will they all resolve even though the first one will kill the Mage?

  • I guess the second would kill him, I didnt check the toughness.

They will all resolve, as they don't target the card itself. Once an ability is on the stack, unless it's countered or a target becomes ineligible, it will resolve. If you had 40 mana you could kill someone with him. Or just give him protection from red.

112.7a Once activated or triggered, an ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Destruction or removal of the source after that time wont affect the ability. Note that some abilities cause a source to do something (for example, Prodigal Sorcerer deals 1 damage to target creature or player) rather than the ability doing anything directly. In these cases, any activated or triggered ability that references information about the source because the effect needs to be divided checks that information when the ability is put onto the stack. Otherwise, it will check that information when it resolves. In both instances, if the source is no longer in the zone its expected to be in at that time, its last known information is used. The source can still perform the action even though it no longer exists.

Regardless of whether he has left the battlefield, the Embermage will deal damage using it's last known information. For example, if it had an aura giving it lifelink or infect, even though it leaves the battlefield after the first and second ability resolves, the third resolution will still act as if it had those abilities.

Also, the first one doesn't kill the mage. He has 2 toughness, not 1.

no if its target nologer existes or becomes an ilegal target the ability will fizzle causeing it to be countered (sortof) and removed from the stack compleatly insted of resolving

opps i though you were talking about the target

i belive if the mage dies the abilitys will still resolve properly since its not the target, like you can play Sleep on a player even if he does not have any creatures
