Will Bruna, Light of Alabaster's static ability proc Prowess on my other creatures?

Asked by BoromirNW 10 years ago

Hypothetically let's say I'm playing with Bruna as my commander, and I currently have Riverwheel Aerialists out. I swing with Bruna and let's say attach 3 Enchantments from my hand / graveyard. Will those technically be "casting non-creature spells" and make my Riverwheel Aerialists a 7/8 getting +3/+3 from the enchantments played from outside the battlefield?

I'm certain that attaching aura's that are already on the battlefield will not proc Prowess, just not sure about hand / graveyard retrieval.

First, nothing can "proc" in Magic. Proc is short for programmed random occurrence. Procs have a statistical chance of happening at a given time. Probably one of the best examples is a critical hit in any MOBA, FPS, or RPG. Critcs can happen, but they only have a chance of happening on any given hit.

Magic uses triggers, which always happen when the stated condition is true.

With that out of the way, the answer to your question is no. Although casting is one of the primary means of getting permanents onto the battlefield, it isn't the only way, and it isn't necessitated that casting is involved in this zone change.

Bruna, Light of Alabaster's ability just tells you to return the Aura cards from your graveyard to the battlefield. The ability doesn't instruct you to cast them, so you don't. You only cast something as the result of a spell or ability if that spell or ability specifically uses the word "cast."

First off, abilities don't "proc" in Magic. "Proc" means "programmed random occurence". Those don't happen in Magic. Prowess triggers.

Second off, no, the ability of Bruna, Light of Alabaster does not trigger Prowess. Prowess specifically triggers off of a noncreature spell being cast, which is a specific process in Magic, which includes paying costs and putting spells on the stack. Bruna's ability moves the Auras in question straight to the battlefield, no casting involved.

Thank you both, Epochalyptik and erabel, I'm new to terms and phrases as well as returning to Magic after quite a long break. Was really hoping this combo would be possible in my deck I'm building but thank you guys for clearing it up! Appreciate it!

Currently hard-organizing my cards after finally acquiring too many to just "go through that color" to find cards I want. Was brainstorming since I pulled Bruna in my most recent purchase of boosters. Already having fun scheming how to play this deck. :D
