When spirit tokens come into play during my upkeep does it proc spiritcrft abilities?

Asked by Barrelbomb 11 years ago

Essentially i could not find a definitive answer to this question, i play alot of Kamigawa cards and the guys i play with said that they are not sure on the ruling of this question but they go with it anyway. The thing is if i were to use say Honden of Life's Web then play Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens does the spirit tokens that come into play during my upkeep proc Oyobi's ability(whenever i play a spirit or arcane spell put a 3/3 white spirit token with flying into play)

Whenever you play is old wording for whenever you cast. The token that enter the battlefield don't get cast meaning you won't get a trigger from Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens .

No. A token is never a spell. Additionally, effects that cause you to put something onto the battlefield don't cause you to cast that permanent.

Right. You can only play (Oldese for cast) cards from your hand. A token is just an object that enters the battlefield (Newese for "put into play"), but isn't really cast, since it's never a spell. So, no, it wouldn't trigger Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens .

Hope this helps!

@twospires: That answer is somewhat inaccurate. You can play cards from any non-battlefield zone, provided you have an effect that enables you to do so.

Oh, right. Good point, I didn't really think about that. So, yeah, you can cast stuff from the graveyard (maybe with flashback). That's the only place I can think of right off the top of my head. Thanks for the correction, Epochalyptik.

@Barrelbomb: You can sometimes deduce the answer by thinking about the wording on the cards themselves. If putting a token into play counted as somehow casting that token, Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens 's ability would lead to a one-card infinite loop. It wouldn't have made sense to design the card that way if this were the case.
