When is summoning sickness gone

Asked by Starch20 12 years ago

Lets say I play a Gemhide Sliver and then let it be my opponents turn. Can I tap it for mana on my opponents turn or does it have summoning sickness until my next turn?

A creature you control has summoning sickness if you have not controlled it continuously since the start of your most recent turn. Since here the Sliver came under your control after your most recent turn began, you cannot use its abilities with the tap or untap symbol, nor attack with it (since it lacks haste)

I'm not certain, but I think it has summoning sickness until your next turn. I think it can still block on your opponent's turn immediately following the turn in which you summoned it. BTW, I love Gemhide sliver.

Summoning sickness is removed at the beginning of your next turn. If you were to somehow play a creature at the end of your opponents turn, say with flash or some ability, That creature would be able to tap and/or attack on your turn.

From the Comprehensive Rules:

302.6. A creature's activated ability with the tap symbol or the untap symbol in its activation cost can't be activated unless the creature has been under its controller's control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. A creature can't attack unless it has been under its controller's control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. This rule is informally called the "summoning sickness" rule.

What about activated abilities that don't require the creature to tap or untap, such as Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius ?

if you could play a creature on ur opponents turn before your turn you will be able to use if to tap or attack on ur next turn. this is why flash is such an incredible mechanic

any abilities that dont require a tap or to wait til u could play a sorcery, can be played at any time you could play an instant if the conditions are met

You could use Niv-Mizzet's ability once he has hit the field, so long as he is not killed before you pay the activation cost for his ability.

@Keneke01 That is incorrect in many respects, except for the main one.

Yes, you can use activated abilities the turn it comes out.

However, you can activate the ability before he is killed (assuming you have the mana), in two separate respects.

First off, priority is passed between players in APNAP order, Therefore, you can activate the ability of Niv Mizzet (directly after he hits the field) before anyone can do anything. However, if you do not activate his ability directly after he hits the field, the second situation will happen.

The second situation being that you can activate activated abilities anytime you have priority, therefore, after someone plays a kill spell on Niv Mizzet, and passes priority, you can activate his ability, triggering any triggered abilities, resolving all abilities on the stack, and then the creature will be killed.

the stack resolves one card at a time so its preferable to draw in response to a kill spell because you'll then draw and have a chance to counter spell or unsummon or whatever before the kill spell resolves. In most cases anyway :)

if he responds to you drawing, the kill spell is the first to resolve and thus it will be too late to save it :<

Please don't necro old threads, make a new thread with your question. This also applies to my post now, seeing as I'm 2 months late. Please don't copy me.

New Prahv Guildmage doesn't use the tap/untap symbols, nor require you to have declared it as an attacker. So yeah you can use it's printed abilities even when suffering from summoning sickness.
