When does ashmouth hound's ability activate.

I was playing and my opponent played a Boros Reckoner. I defended with my ashmouth hound and we later realized he should have died. Does this work.

Also, the ability triggers. Only activated abilities (abilities written "[cost]: [effect]") can be activated.

Also if it is blocked by something with 1 toughness does it still do damage to the player

@luke141 No, as soon as Ashmouth Hound becomes blocked it is considered blocked even though the blocking creature dies before damage step. Unless you give it tramble it will not deal damage to defending player after being blocked.
Also considering your original scenario it is highly unlikely that you could kill Boros Reckoner with Ashmouth Hound if you opponent is at all awake since they can just send the 1 damage back to the Hound and kill it with that damage before combat damage step, but technically if your opponent isn't awake or wants to kill something else more badly than your Hound then the Reckoner would die along with your Hound.

I'm not sure what you're even asking.
When Ashmouth Hound blocks or is blocked by a creature, its ability triggers. The ability will deal 1 damage to the blocked/blocking creature when it resolves.
This means Ashmouth Hound will deal 1 damage to Boros Reckoner before combat damage is dealt, so Boros Reckoner 's ability will trigger and deal 1 damage to its target.
Then, if both creatures are still alive, they deal combat damage to one another. At this point, both creatures would die for being dealt 3 damage.
