What is the difference between Daxos' ability and Commune with Lava?

Asked by Zacoly 8 years ago

Daxos of Meletis ability says "you may cast" may I still play lands exiled with him?

Commune with Lava says "play" may I play the lands?

Is there a rule/ruling on this?

Always check the Gatherer rulings before posting a question.

Daxos of Meletis:
9/15/2013: If the exiled card is a land card, you wont gain any life and you wont be able to play the land.

Commune with Lava:
2/25/2015: Under normal circumstances, you can play a land card exiled with Commune with Lava only if you havent played a land yet that turn.

Lands are not spells. You can never cast lands. Therefore, effects that allow you to "cast" something can't allow you to play a land. Effects that allow you to "play" something allow you to play it if it's a land or cast it if it's a nonland.

Daxos of Meletis' ability would not allow you to play lands, as "casting" requires the exiled card to be a spell. However, Commune with Lava's "play those cards" wording allows you to put exiled lands into play, as long as you haven't already played a land that turn.

Source: 601.1. Previously, the action of casting a spell, or casting a card as a spell, was referred to on cards as "playing" that spell or that card. Cards that were printed with that text have received errata in the Oracle card reference so they now refer to "casting" that spell or that card.

601.1a Some effects still refer to "playing" a card. "Playing a card" means playing that card as a land or casting that card as a spell, whichever is appropriate.

  • for Daxos :9/15/2013 If the exiled card is a land card, you wont gain any life and you wont be able to play the land.

  • for commune - yes you can play lands or cast spells (which is how you play spells.)

2/25/2015 Playing a card this way follows the normal rules for playing the card. You must pay its costs, and you must follow all applicable timing rules. For example, if one of the cards is a creature card, you can cast that card only during your main phase while the stack is empty.
2/25/2015 Under normal circumstances, you can play a land card exiled with Commune with Lava only if you havent played a land yet that turn.
