Spells, triggered abilities, and activated abilities resolve.
To resolve a spell or ability on the stack, all players must pass priority without adding any new spells or abilities to the stack. If priority is passed in this way, the topmost spell or ability on the stack resolves. This means it has its effect. When a spell or ability begins to resolve, players lose priority until the end of the process. The spell or ability's effects are executed in the order in which they're written. When these effects have been fully executed, the object is removed from the stack.
Permanent spells (such as creature spells) are put onto the battlefield when they resolve. Instants and sorceries go to their owner's graveyard. Abilities are removed from the stack and cease to exist.
Once the resolution process is complete, the active player regains priority.

Resolving is what a spell does when it priority is passed twice while it is the top element on the stack. When a spell resolves, it has its effect and goes to the graveyard, when a creature spell resolves it enters the battlefield.
What it means in the context of haunt is that haunt only triggers when the spell resolves and goes to the graveyard, and not, say, if it were countered or discarded and went to the graveyard.

@Devonin: Abilities also resolve, and all permanent spells are put onto the battlefield as permanents as they resolve.

@Epochalyptik I thought we were doing that thing where we answer the question they ask completely, but without also answering all the other elements of the possible answer to the question if it were asked differently :P I described the information pertinent to his question, and then an additional example to demonstrate the difference. I didn't know we were being absolutely comprehensive :P

It's best to be comprehensive on a question as basic as this one.

Resolving is what happens to all spells and abilities when not countered.
