What is Braid of Fire's cumulative upkeep?

Do you just gain mana? or do you have to pay and gain mana?

Basically at the beginning of your first upkeep after you play Braid of Fire, it will add to your mana pool. You have until the end of the upkeep to use this mana, after which all the mana that you have not spent will vanish (which will happen immediately before you draw your card for the turn).
During your second upkeep, instead of just you will get
, under the same stipulation. On your third upkeep, you'll get
and so on.

Always check the Gatherer rulings before posting a question.
10/1/2009: Braid of Fire is a very unusual card. "Add to your mana pool" is a cost. This enchantment does nothing but add increasing amounts of mana to your mana pool during your upkeep.

I'm not even sure what that is, brand spanking new to the game; and just going off of the basic rules and going from there. I'll have to check that out, though.

Gatherer is Wizards of the Coast's Magic card search engine. It provides card images, card wording changes, basic rulings for common questions, and more.

No, you just gain mana.
Keep in mind that when this card was printed Mana Burn was still a thing, so gaining mana wasn't just "all upside" like it is today.
