What is a trap card?

Asked by JMANNO33O 12 years ago

Quite simple. Though I know it's old, I want to be able to know what it is if I don't play standard.

A trap card is any card with the subtype Trap (e.g. Mindbreak Trap ). They were printed in Zendikar and Worldwake.

Trap cards feature an alternate, reduced cost that may only be paid if a certain condition is met.

A full list of trap cards can be found here.

It's a subtype of card. Trap cards have alternative costs that can be paid if certain prerequisites have been fulfilled that turn.

Here is a list of them all on Gatherer:

Thanks. Is there a reason why they stopped making these? I could see a lot of use from them.

They were specific to Zendikar (the plane). A lot of mechanics are developed as a way to expand the flavor of blocks. Traps were the card incarnations of Zendikar's treacherous and unstable terrain. Transform creatures more accurately represent the properties of werewolves. Populate is an extension of the flavor of the Selesnya Conclave, which focuses on tokens and masses.
