What happens when you Mimic Vat a Commander?

Asked by Zerafiall 11 years ago

As far as I can tell, the ruling for commanders is:

"If [this card] would be put in the graveyard or the exile zone, you may instead put it in the command zone"

So... If I have my commander out and i have Mimic Vat out and my commander dies. Can I allow him to hit the graveyard, then exile him with Mimic Vat, then when he's put in exile, instead put him in the command zone. And still make tokens of my commander.

Yes, you can do that. If It's your commander, you get to choose whether it goes to the graveyard/exile or the command zone.

Take note, that you will never be able to put him back into the command zone after that(because he won't change zones, you'll just keep making a copy).

Also... What happens if a new creature hit the graveyard and I choose to exile that one. Will my commander go back to the yard from the command zone, or can I keep him in the command zone.

(Actually. I don't think it matters since if he would be put in the graveyard, the commander rule would trigger and let me put him back in the command zone anyways)

If you choose to put your commander into the Command zone instead of exile then "the exiled card" in Mimic Vat 's activated ability won't be referring to anything, and it won't make a token.

The Command zone rule covers the commander going into exile or the graveyard from anywhere and for any reason. If you currently have your commander in exile imprinted on Mimic Vat and another creature dies, triggering Vat's first ability, then if you choose to imprint the new creature you can put your commander back into the Command zone instead of the graveyard.

Yes, but what if Mimic Vat gets destroyed when you have your general imprinted on it? Can you still get it from there in the command zone?

Unfortunately, no. The replacement effect that lets you move the Commander to the command zone instead of other zones (the rules about this recently changed from "graveyard or exile" to "graveyard, exile, library, or hand") can only be applied if it's actually changing zones. Destroying Mimic Vat doesn't cause the exiled card to change zones, so there's nothing you can do.
