What happens to a kicked creature with undying?
Asked by Kravian 12 years ago
Does a card keep track of its kicker when it enters the battlefield from the graveyard?
Gatekeeper of Malakir and Bloodhusk Ritualist are the ones that interest me particularly.

No. Whenever a permanent reenters the battlefield, it has no ties to its previous status as a permanent. Gatekeeper of Malakir won't remember that it was kicked last time it ETBed. Also, kickers are paid during casting, so you can't rekick Gatekeeper of Malakir this time.

Kicker costs are additional costs when casting a spell whereas Undying would let the creature return to the battlefield if it didn't has any +1/+1 counters when it enters the graveyard. Technically, no spells were casted at all and as such you would not be able to pay the kicker cost as it was not casted from your hand.

No, it's a separate creature and doesn't remember back when you cast it. Creatures that enter the battlefield from the graveyard, or really by any means other than being cast, will not be kicked, because kicking a spell is something you do when you cast it.
So when these creatures enter the battlefield, the game asks, "Has this been kicked?", decides it hasn't, and does nothing.
