What happens first? Stack question

Asked by Monteleone 10 years ago

If I have a Blightsteel Colossus on the battlefield and use Jalira, Master Polymorphist ability sacrificing Blightsteel Colossus is the colossus revealed and shuffled into my library before or after i reveal cards from my library until I reveal a non-legendary creature.

Blightsteel Colossus 's ability is a replacement effect (which always use the words "if" or "instead" in them). Replacement effects change the outcome of events and do not use the stack.

Since sacrificing a creature is part of the cost of activating Jalira, Master Polymorphist , the Colossus will be shuffled into the library (instead of going to the graveyard when it gets sacrificed) before the ability resolves.

It's worth pointing out that Blightsteel Colossus would be shuffled into its owner's library regardless of whether its last ability were a triggered ability or a replacement effect. If it were a triggered ability, it would trigger during the activation process of Jalira, Master Polymorphist 's ability, so it would be put onto the stack above that ability (and therefore resolve first).

Back to replacement effects: the shuffle would still happen first even if the sacrifice was part of the resolution of the ability because the shuffle is a replacement effect and happens immediately.
