some one said that it means it must be a even number of mana. like 2,4,6,8,10 and another person said it means if you pay 8 you get a 4,4.. so for this card... Monstrosity XXGWhen Hydra Broodmaster becomes monstrous, put X X/X green Hydra tokens onto the battlefield. if i pay 10 mana how many X X/X do i get
@Raging_Squiggle: I like to differentiate between X and , precisely because of questions like this one arising from not doing so. X is a number (a constant, if you want), where
is a cost. You never declare a value for
, just for X, as you don't get to set costs, but instead, costs are based on your choice for the value. This is in line with how cards are printed, and while possibly appearing to be overly picky, I think it helps greatly with understanding as well as explaining the concept.
To activate monstrous, you declare a value for X, say 5.
Then, for each iteration of
, you must pay
. So, the monstrous activation cost will be
.
Then, the following effects on the card are tied to your value for X, meaning Hydra Broodmaster will get 5 +1/+1 counters, and you will get 5 5/5 Hydra tokens.
