The opponent gains one life for each age counter on Wall of Shards , so it goes 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 ...... and so on.

First, you misunderstand what the cumulative upkeep cost is. Wall of Shards 's CUC is "An opponent gains 1 life." You don't gain any life, and you don't pay any life. The only life total that changes is your opponent's.
Second, CUCs must be paid for each age counter on the permanent. If there is one age counter on Wall of Shards , you pay its CUC one time. If there are five age counters on Wall of Shards , you pay its CUC five times. Partial payments are not allowed. If you cannot, or don't want to, pay the full CUC, you sacrifice the permanent.

at your upkeep put an age counter on Wall of Shards then an opponent gains 1 life for each age counter on it so the first turn they would gain 1 life, then 2, then 3 etc.
