Wall of Shadows and trample
Asked by Fizzz 11 years ago
Hey guys,
If Wall of Shadows prevents all the damage that would be dealt when blocking a creature, how would trample work when my 3/3 trample creature is blocked by this wall?

Woops... that was me posting the above, somehow my session died when I went to post... in case it gets deleted later for not having a valid user attached, I will repeat what I said:
You will still take 2 damage; Wall of Shadows is a 0/1, so it will only need to have 1 damage assigned to it. The attacking creature doesn't care that it will not actually have this damage marked on it, it only cares this should be enough to be considered lethal, which satisfies the requirement for its trample to work.
There's a similar ruling on Gatherer for the related card Fog Bank that might interest you: If Fog Bank blocks a creature with trample, that creature's controller must assign 2 damage to Fog Bank (assuming it's blocking no other creatures, there was no damage marked on it, and nothing has changed its toughness). The remainder can be assigned to the defending player or planeswalker.
