using Catch to steal a planeswalker

Asked by binx17 11 years ago

Hello, I was curious if I cast Catch from Catch // Release on an opponents planeswalker and successfully take it from them can I then use one of the planeswalker's abilities if my opponent used that planeswalker on their turn?

Catch / Release

No, each planeswalker can only have one of it's abilities activated once per turn. Since it's still the same permanent, you wouldn't be able to activate another ability. If a planeswalker reenters the battlefield, then it is a new permanent, and it's abilities can be activated.

306.5d. Each planeswalker has a number of loyalty abilities, which are activated abilities with loyalty symbols in their costs. Loyalty abilities follow special rules: A player may activate a loyalty ability of a permanent he or she controls any time he or she has priority and the stack is empty during a main phase of his or her turn, but only if none of that permanents loyalty abilities have been activated that turn. See rule 606, Loyalty Abilities.

You wouldn't be able to anyway. Loyalty abilities can only be activated any time you could cast a sorcery; that is, on your turn when the stack is empty. If your opponent has already activated a loyalty ability this turn before you steal it, clearly it isn't your turn.

Wait, I am getting slightly mixed up here, it is early.

Okay, scenario: your opponent plays Garruk Relentless  Flip , uses its 0 to deal 3 damage to a vanilla 2/2 creature, flipping it to Garruk, the Veil-Cursed  Flip .

On your turn, you cast Catch / Release to take his Garruk, the Veil-Cursed  Flip until end of turn. You CAN use one of his abilities, so therefore the best one to use in this scenario is the -1; you get to tutor and kill Garruk at the same time

Thanks for answering everyone, I meant it to be on my turn that I cast Catch / Release but I should've included that info. Thanks!
