Urza's armor interactions.

Asked by Va1mar 10 years ago

I had a couple questions pertaining to this cards ability. Firstly, would it prevent 2 damage from a double strike creature, or are both damages assigned to a player at the same time. Secondly, how would it work against effects like "target player takes one damage every time he draws a card" if I were to be drawing a bunch of cards at a time.

Please link all cards in your question, that makes it easier for people who aren't familiar with all cards. Formatting guide at the bottom.

Urza's Armor

702.4b If at least one attacking or blocking creature has first strike (see rule 702.7) or double strike as the combat damage step begins, the only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are those with first strike or double strike. After that step, instead of proceeding to the end of combat step, the phase gets a second combat damage step. The only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are the remaining attackers and blockers that had neither first strike nor double strike as the first combat damage step began, as well as the remaining attackers and blockers that currently have double strike. After that step, the phase proceeds to the end of combat step.

With an attacking double strike creature, there are 2 combat damage steps. You will be dealt damage 2 times by this creature, so Urza's Armor will prevent 2 damage.

Effects like Nekusar, the Mindrazer's second ability are damage, so 1 of that damage will be prevented. If you draw more than 1 card at a time, these abilities will trigger multiple times (so, not 1 trigger that deals 5 damage, but 5 trigger that deal 1 damage each). For each of these, Urza's Armor will prevent 1 damage.
