Trample vs Bounce?

Asked by notKingCole 9 years ago

Say Duskdale Wurm attacks, and I declare Savage Knuckleblade as a blocker. Then, I return Knuckleblade to my hand before damage is dealt. Do I still take damage?

Yes you would take seven damage. The controller of Duskdale Wurm has to assign seven damage to a legal object if possible. Since Savage Knuckleblade is no longer on the battlefield it cannot assign any damage to it so it must assign 7 damage to you. It can assign damage to you because it has trample and all blockers, even if there aren't any, have been dealt lethal damage.

Just a nit pick: Duskdale Wurm doesn't have to deal it's damage to the player.

Trample says:

If this creature would assign enough damage to its blockers to destroy them, you may have it assign the rest of its damage to defending player or planeswalker.

Since their are no blockers after you return Savage Knuckleblade to your hand, there are no creatures to which Duskdale Wurm can assign enough damage to destroy. The controller can then choose to assign all 7 damage to you. If they forget to, you are in no way, shape, or form obliged to remind them of that. ;-)

@TheHroth Normally that would be the case but in this situation there is nothing else for them to assign combat damage to so they are actually required to assign the damage to you because all combat damage must be assigned. What would said would be true if there was an indestructible creature blocking which already had lethal damage on it.
