Trample ability and "return to hand" ability : who would preveal?

Let's say i've got a trampling creature onto the battlefield (like or becomes blocked by Vedalken Mastermind and it active its ability, will the trample damage being applied in any case, dealing 13 damage to defending player (because the blocking creature's imaginary toughness is 0) or will it just be "cancelled"?

I should add, the another example of this effect is Trample and Double Strike (Runes of the Deus ). If First Strike damage kills all the defending creatures, the attacker will still deal his damage on the 'normal' damage phase for the same reason as above. This would not be true if the creature did not have Trample.

Just as i expected then. The same works for sacrifices like Altar's Reap too i suppose... thanks for the answer by the way :)

Yep, that is exactly what happens. Trample has to deal lethal damage to all creatures blocking it before it can move on to the player. While would be "Blocked" in this case, he doesn't have any creatures blocking it anymore to assign lethal damage, if that makes any sense. So you can move all the damage to the player since the "lethal damage" role has already be fulfilled at zero.
