Through the Breach and Myojin.
Asked by mobankh 8 years ago
Can I use Through the breach to get a Myojin of Seeing Winds into play and still have the Divinity counter? Since its only restriction is "If you played it from your hand", it makes sense that it does. Since Through the Breach takes a creature in YOUR hand, and puts in into play?If it doesnt, please explain why.(Emrakul says: "When you CAST"...) Myojin does not mention anything about having to be cast.
Thanks

To be clear, cards that were printed recently that say play mean what they say. Older cards are the problem.

Here's the relevant rule:
701.11d. Previously, the action of casting a spell, or casting a card as a spell, was referred to on cards as playing that spell or that card. Cards that were printed with that text have received errata in the Oracle card reference so they now refer to casting that spell or that card.
Without quoting the whole thing, 701.11 explains that the only card type that is played and not cast is a Land card. Everything else is cast. However, the terms were functionally identical for non-land spells even before that change, as playing a card implied one actually went through the process that's now called casting, such as paying a cost, putting it on the stack, and so on. Using a second card to put that card into play never counted as "playing" a card.
What I mean to say with that is that there's no functional difference here, just a wording change.
@TheFoilAjani: I'd phrase that as "never cards more often are correct about what they say than older ones" - for example, with the recent addition of the symbol, most "newer" cards (meaning ones that aren't even a year old) technically aren't up-to-date...

I have one more question. Iona, Shield of Emeria - If she leaves play, does her ability disappear? Since it doesnt say "For the rest of the game"... I believe it does.

Please ask unrelated questions in new threads.
Yes. Unless otherwise stated, abilities of permanents function only while those cards are on the battlefield.

Please link all relevant cards:

Through the Breach
Whenever a non-land card tells you to play it, it really means cast it. This was a wording change that occurred... I'm not really sure when. But here is the Oracle text-
Myojin of Seeing Winds enters the battlefield with a divinity counter on it if you cast it from your hand.
So no, Myojin will have no counter.
