The Holy Nimbus vs removal spells..
Asked by Metroid_Hybrid 12 years ago
I'm curious how the auto-regen ability of Clergy of the Holy Nimbus & Knight of the Holy Nimbus would interact with the likes of say; Dead Weight or Grasp of Darkness?
Regenerate means that if it would be dealt lethal damage, prevent it. Dead Weight and Grasp of Darkness don't deal damage, they reduce power and toughness so they would both kill both nimbus.

Regeneration - The next time that creature would be destroyed this turn, it isn't. Instead tap it, remove all damage from it, and remove it from combat.
With that being the wording and all, as far as I know, the cards you mentioned would still go to the graveyard because they reached 0 toughness and were sent to the graveyard as a state-based effect. No actual DAMAGE has been dealt.

Look at the time stamps. We almost all went at the same time!

Yeah, creatures with zero toughness are put into their owner's graveyards the next time state-based actions are checked. The only sources of destruction are lethal damage from a source without wither or infect, and an effect that explicitly states the word "destroy". Sacrificing is not destruction. Exiling is not destruction. Having zero toughness is not destruction. Regenerate prevents the next event of destruction with its "instead" clause, and then removes the lethal damage (which would simply cause it to be destroyed again).

To put it simply, regeneration doesn't work if the creature's toughness is being reduced below zero. Regeneration prevents a creature from being "destroyed," and that only happens when it has taken lethal damage, taken damage from a deathtouch source, had a spell "destroy" it, etc. Having its toughness reduced to 0 or less does not actually "destroy" it; it is just moved to the graveyard as a state-based effect, thus regeneration won't work.
Clergy and Knight would both die to Dead Weight and Grasp of Darkness; their regeneration would have no effect.
