tarmogoyf mechanics
Asked by rolypolyguy 10 years ago
so i was playing big zoo in two headed giant today and i run 3 copies of Tarmogoyf and when i played him my opponent was convinced that he was a 11/12 when i thought he should only be a 6/7 and he told me that it was each graveyard collectively. for example i had land, creature, planeswalker, and instant. my team mate had artifact creatures and an instant. and my opponents had land, sorcerys, creatures, and instants. im pretty sure 6/7 is right but i thought id just check

First, rules questions should be asked in the Q&A, which is linked in the header bar. I can't move this to the Q&A, so I'm going to move it to BE.
Tarmogoyf does check all graveyards, but it only counts card types once. Its ability runs down the list of card types and just checks whether a card of that type exists in a graveyard, not how many graveyards contain a card of that type.
In this case, you have a 6/7 Tarmogoyf because of the following card types: land, creature, planeswalker, instant, artifact, sorcery.

Tarmogoyf counts card types, for a maximum of one per type for all graveyards. With no buffs, a gofy can be an 8/9 at best.

@JexInfinite: I forgot nothing. I was counting the card types currently in graveyards in this scenario.
